it's probably kind of difficult, given how internantional everything is n stuff, but it'd be great if musicians could unionize, like actors did. (not a musician, so idk if it's already a thing or not, but from the looks of it, it doesn'T seem so)

Hello, herman, thanks for your time, i can not understand how an artist would be stuck with all the bills and risk, the dedication you and all the well known artists have, the discipline and effort alone, after all those years of practice to be really really good at your craft and not be rewarded for it, makes no sense at all...promoters take way to much for what, maybe the reality of all the excess BS from the promoters may have come to a head here and finally be realized, i can not see why a band with their music, the rights to their music and all the intellectual property, they deserve the most of the money, lets face it, you guys, meaning all artists love to get out and play and share your wonderful music with all of us, and we the people, the fans, love to go see it, you deserve the lion share of the money........... maybe i, like most fans, we are not aware of all the expense it takes to put on a rockin tour, maybe someone could share some of that with all of us some time,. just an idea here, maybe if a band announces they would like to play some big special dates, maybe they need to be paid ahead of time from all us fans before they hit the road, with the expectation we will get a great show and you will then know how much the band could afford and how much to put into the show as far as production, no live streaming/ stealing, very organized, i do not know, i have no answer, i know nothing about all this, but i feel the artists, the bands need to be paid the major part of the proceeds, otherwise i see a big collapse of the system as we all know it,. if your really good you should be able/deserve to make a good living,........after all the dedication, the artist needs to be paid very well for their craft and abilities... in order for the world to be able to Rock on...........

Herman, 1- I'm afraid the copyrights system was lost, the moment mp3 came in to existance. And when the genie is out of the bottle, ... Even if there was a perfect copy protection, one can always make a very high quality analog copy. 2- You say the small bands suffer the most and that's true ofcourse, but even The Rolling Stones don't have the rights of their own music from before early 70's. Michael Jackson had a fight with Sony. George Michael didn't publish for 2 yrs because of his quarrel with, I believe it was Sony too. So, it's not from the last few years and it seems you can only get a fair deal when you get mega status or when you have your own label. I don't mean to offend, but I think most musicians are too soft for negotiating contracts. You want to be published, so you agree much too soon. Certainly when you're young and don't care about the money yet. So maybe have a lawyer or something step in? Cause a lot of managers also only seem interested in stealing your money. 3- Personally, after watching Marco's video and reading between the lines, I think some of the newer mebers of the band have gotten better contracts then Marco and he recently found out. Together with all his old grievances against the Music Co., this might just have been the last drop. Being chronically depressed myself, I can pretty much 'feel' what happened in his mind and I think it's the only decision he could have made, to stay away from the darkest parts of his mind. I hope he will return to a better state of mind and that he will rejoin Nightwish. It's more than a band, it's family and Marco is too important to the band and the family.

Sadly, I have to agree with him and wish him well. An example of the music industry greed is with the advent of music CD's. They charged at $3 premium over vinyl with the promise that CD's would eventually drop to the $8 range once the conversion was complete. They converted to CD's and kept the prices at the $18 range, pocketing the $10 premium. And they were upset with the advent of Napster when their own greed created the environment that made its development and popularity possible. I will miss him but I cannot expect him to sweep floors then play. As the poem goes, "To cage the bird then bid it to sing."

Well here in Sweden I will get an insurance if I start working in the local grocery store, so it's crazy that big artists like this cannot get the same benefits/insurance. I was going to say, what is the difference between a person working in a grocery store (not letting down on people working in grocery stores) and a person who spend his or here time creating music that we all consume like food (because it is that important so most of people).

And people said there was no way for 2021 to be any worse than 2020. Pff... Up for a really f***ed up start if you ask me. Marko survived the Tarja break up. Survived Anette. And now, when Nightwish finally assumed their final and most epic form of all, we won't be able to experience the magic live anymore. He, Jukka, and Emppu stood up for Tuomas when he needed them, i just hope the rest of the band will manage to support him and help him get back on his feet. The current lineup is now so epic i can' t imagine the band w/o any of the members.

These are really cool thoughts! But maybe someone could share their thoughts on this: I really believe Marko and Herman Li when they say how tough music is for everyone right now, but I think I'm right in saying that Tuomas lives on a ranch with horses (in expensive Finland). Nightwish (and maybe Dragonforce too) must've done pretty well out of their music. I *totally* understand that depression and mental health is a completely different issue, and that successful musicians are humans too. I also know I don't understand the pressures involved in touring etc. So I get Marko leaving on that front. I'd also get it if he was just real bored after twenty years :P But in terms of talking about the major corporations taking money from bands, and bands not making much money from touring... is that REALLY right?? It doesn't seem like they're doing *too* badly out of it...? Not here to argue, just interested to know more. And Herman Li - if you read this and you're bored, I'd love to hear your take :)

This pains me. In Hollywood, actors and actresses get hundreds of millions of dollars for one movie -- even if they have little to no talent. Sports athletes, same thing: Millions, or hundreds of millions of dollars, to play a game. Yet, the true inspirational people, artists, musicians, and the like, get scraps. Honestly, I would rather pay a musician what they're worth, than pay an actor or athlete what they're worth, any day. Music stays with you -- movies and games do not. Music is a teacher, a psychologist, and a sounding board, all rolled into one. No athlete or actor does that. I just hope Marko has a handle on his chronic depression, because that shit sucks, like a black hole in the soul. I should know, I fight against that part of my nature every day, seems like. I hope Marko comes back, just like I hope Jukka comes back...but he, and Nightwish, deserve way better than they are getting.

He is absolutely right. The only way you have a chance to get money for your work is cutting out the middle man and not affiliate yourself with Big Music. But this is easier said than done, because the contracts, usually signed when the band is still small and will profit from working with a big company, will give the huge chunk of money to the industry for essentially no work. They have all the pipelines set up and just churn out song after song. For them it's like selling cars, coffee, screwdrivers, tennis balls, etc. They do not care about art or music. They just follow the market. And with help of their lawyers and money, they make sure they are not regulated and the artists, once he is in their spider web of contracts, cannot escape and will have all talent sucked out off him/her until they quit music, quit life or had grown a huge fan base and would stand a chance with self publishing and doing advertising and tours on their own. It's an open secret, that the bands under contract do not make money from their songs being bought on CD/vinyl or online, nor do they get a worthwhile chunk of merch money. This goes to Big Music. If your contract did not specify for tours, that is where you are able to make money...if there is no pandemic interfering. I didn't know, that it has gone so far as the company treating you like a slave (or at least a small time temp) and dictating your schedule and when you have to work and when you have to write songs and when you have to practice etc. I would have guessed, with a big band like Nightwish, they have a lot of control over their creative part and daily life. Not about the money, but when to do what. Obviously, it has gone far beyond that. There is a solution: severe all your ties with Big Music. Build your own lable and hire your own people. With a household name like Nightwish and the country on Finland (and the rest of the world) at your back, this will work. No more slaving for small money and hoping the high and mighty will toss you a few penniä when they feel generous. Cut out the middle man. Yes, this will need more work on mundane tasks, but when you hire your own staff, you have all the creativity you want and not paying fealty and tithe to a fat ruler who does not give a shit about you or your music, but only about the flow of money. I will go to your shows, I will buy your merch and your music, but only from your own website and when that money goes directly into your coffers. Kiitos!

Got an idea how fans could directly pay and support the bands they follow, what if bands if they could, do a live stream of an album say it costs $9,99, if you buy the physical media of the album enter a coupon code into the stream and you can watch the stream for free, that way at least artists know then everyone watching the stream would have contributed financially to the band, just an idea

Nightwish is already diminished with the loss of Tarja (yes yes old news but all pieces of the puzzle are important when defining a sound). With Marco leaving in addition to the age of the band, reinvention would be a miracle. There is a shock and finality when a band member dies, Cliff, Warrel, or more relevant Alexi, but there is no questioning the sudden void. When an artist chooses to walk away then start in the "what ifs" I respect Marco's decision, the music he has given us, and hope he finds the path that makes him happy. We only get one life people. Live it.

Sorry mate. i am never again going to buy an album. Think of another way to get my 20 euros in your wallet. As a species we have to buy less shit, not more. We have to reduce the amount of plastics we buy. The oceans are full enough as is. I really urge you to consider something like Patreon. Sure, it would involve putting in additional effort from the band. But i bet that a band like nightwish, if they were to make a patreon and as a perk gave out like the demo versions of songs or maybe like a full acoustic version of a few songs the patreon would do fuckin gangbusters. They would get 1000s of subs. For real. Id even consider it.

Thank you for sharing the additional insight. I'm so glad I don't make a single dime on my music anyway cause this puts it clearly in the "hobby" space and leaves room to earn in a normal job. I'm a strong believer in separating passion and income so that if one goes down you still have the other. Still sucks that people basically cannot really chose music as their job if they want to with all the money being kept in somebody elses pocket.

as much as I can, I buy albums, I'm old school. But for many bands, I can't get their albums, streaming is a good options, once I can't buy a download. I don't like streaming, apps are awful user experiences with Spotify being one of the worst music player ever, maybe it sucks more than iTunes. I use streaming to find new bands and new music, then I buy the album if I like what I hear, if I can get the album, not always I can buy what I hear in streaming services. It really sucks to find out that the artist get close to nothing for what we get in the streaming service. This may be one of the reasons we have new music genre that are trash, all cheap and empty sounds for the sake of profit, the equivalent of empty calories in the music industry.

Like any industry, music industry should evolve, it is no secret musicians have been robbed for decades. If I am a painter I make a great painting and sell it cash the money then it is done, I have to make another painting to keep income coming, when it comes to music and make money from streaming after years and years of writing the song, even after artists die, there is something wrong. I feel musicians have to work like any other artists but in order to keep most of the money they have to integrate marketing team and recording staff integrated into the band. With this age of internet it is not very difficult to do. Music labels have to go, they are corrupt and everyone knows that.

Sad. His voice and music ability will be missed. A few years ago, someone at work told me he streams eveything and kinda laughed when he heard I have CDs. I told him musicians probably lose money because of that. I said that I like having the physical CD in my hand and when I go see a show, I can ask the musician to sign for me and that it would really make their day knowing fans are buying their music. I now see how right I was and how important it really is to go to the store and buy the music. I was about to buy tickets to Dragonforce in Detroit in the spring and was going to wait til the following week then everything shut down. I agree with you Herman and Marko, a lot of great musicians do not get paid the way they are supposed to be paid, compared to mainstream bad taste artists... and they do not even get the recognition they deserve. Unlike mainstream artists, they are living the dream, and yet musicians like metal bands, don't get much, yes they have toured the world but at what cost, just like what you mentioned, Herman, they have to get insurance for themselves which the responsibility should fall on to the promoter and management...Yes, some of you will say, "It costs money to promote" I agree, it does, that's how it works, but at the end of the day, who really benefitted from these things, Is it the musicians or the greedy promoters and management?

I wish Marco the best in his own life and I'm glad he is taking a stand for how he feel and believes. After the tragic end of Keith Emerson, I encourage anyone with depression to make a move in the right direction to move forward in life.

Years ago the band TLC broke down why they had to declare bankruptcy, even when they had the most successful tour and album of the year. They said they were paid 6 million dollars to be split three ways in one year. They said they had to pay for their own studio time recording the album. They had to pay for the production of their own videos promoting the albums. They had to pay for their tour buses, their stage sets, their roadies, their crew, hotels, costumes, etc...They said by the time they finished paying everyone that year, each of them didn't even have enough money to cover their food or rent. It's super sad but true. And to show you that nothing in the music business has changed, TLC gave that interview back in 1995. Nearly 25 years later and the record companies are still screwing artists.

I never realized it was so bad for the artists. I will no longer count on live streams, and I will support my favorite artists by buying the albums and videos instead of freeloading of their hard work. It breaks my heart as it looks like Marco has so much fun on stage. It is a shame that it has come to this.

I'm so sorry for all the professional musicians out there working hard to produce great music and not get paid for it. Give the fans a choice, new companys that concour in this business with better terms and conditions for the musicians.

Marko also mentioned, profits going to Middle East to a theocratic country, where you would get beheaded for listening to the music from Nightwish and embracing what they sing about (Nightwish members are secular atheists mainly). This Middle-Eastern country he refers to is Saudi-Arabia, third biggest shareholder of the Livenation.

strange press release, not polished at all, like a bad translation, or was it not proof read? well, it seems he just had enough. with NW he was in this limbo of well known metal band, but not well known enough for mainstream and the big money. also, the interval of their albums did increase over the years, and the solo projects had a small fanbase, but never took really off. but then, he had the "masked singer success"...maybe that was the final straw that made him think "ok, time for a change, if i want to reinvent myself it's now or never". i have seen signs of big changes in NW coming for about 2 years. Floor quite openly stating she is not looking forward to touring again, she is also pushing her YT channel with her own productions/covers. she had some success outside of the band (home country show). the last album didn't do that well either, and i guess there must have been some discussions about money in the band because their tour-staff tried to do some NW-covers and raise some money, which i don't think took off. so, yea, i fully understand him going "wait, we are the largest metal band in the world, but still struggling for money? how can that even be?!"

The phrase "music industry" already clashes to the idea of musicians own freedom of making and performing music at their own pace and script. Do we call other live performaces industries? Theatre? Circus? Ballet? Poem reading? No! There is movie industry, probably equally ruthless to the performers like the music industry. Milking away from talented people, a bunch of hyenas, driving talented people into experiencing depressions and messed up lives. I'm happy that Marco decided to leave and focus into other projects.

Proud to say I've never used streaming services and never will. Will always buy legitimate downloads, CDs or vinyl. Always felt I was helping support the artists more that way. Sad and disgusted to hear that the touring scene is also apparently going down the pan. I thought it was how bands actually made most of their money now. This sucks so much!

I think Marko is absolutely right. The involvement of big business in music will always end up sacrificing people in order to squeeze the most possible profit out of their creativity. This is an endemic problem in modern business culture everywhere. It will only really change if we can shift our collective focus away from money and on to humanity. Hmmm... I'm starkly reminded of the film Breaking Glass, starring Hazel O'Connor. I think it was made in 1979, over 40 years ago!

To me what's happening to the music industry is just another example of what has happened/is happening to industry generally. The executives are finding ever more creative ways to squeeze the workforce in order to feed the shareholders so that the executives get their salaries. Basically the people with assets and capital get rewarded, the people doing the labour not so much.

I play in garage band and it is my hobby, so my oppinions maybe do not fit problems of profesional musicians. I have experience that it is easier to manage a concert on my own, and it also brings more money. Maybe, pay own gig manager together with other bands could be a better way than slavery of agency. And even if it earns less money compared with super big festival, it could be more for bands. I do not know the nubres, so you have to think about it.

Very sad day for the Nightwish community, but Marco has given 20 years to Nightwish and his health and wellbeing has to come first. If he is no longer fulfilled by being a fulltime musician, I just hope he can find something that makes him happy.

Back in the early days 87 - 90's you had to go in the studio to record unless you wanted a shity tape done on a foster 4 track lol. Now we can record at home and get killer tones and mixes with our laptops so I say fuck the big man.

The music industry has changed a lot, and the way people consume music as well. As an outside viewer, I guess that it's more worthy for the artists to relase many singles and videoclips on youtube along the year instead working almost one or two years making an whole album.

Time to unionise guys, especially since talented musicians essentially own the means of production. Even start an industry (musician/producer/engineer etc.) owned streaming service to compete against the bigwigs.

The industry has been dead for years. No more record company support. No album support, no tour support, nothing. The most you can hope for is a distribution deal and even those are filled with greedy industry types. The grassroots approach of making an album and touring with record company support is long gone. It’s very difficult to make your own album, promote, tour, handle merch and everything else unless you are already at supergroup status. New bands have almost no chance these days and that’s a terrible shame.

It is time for the money to go directly to the artists and not to vendors, promotors and fat blokes who fill their pockets doing nothing. Licencing and GEMA has lead to less and less income for the artists who really do the work. It is sad he left, but i understand his point.
