As a fan I miss the live music and believe that live music will never be the same even after these vaccinations. Hell we have some health professionals and politicians thst agree with these same health professionals saying that mask wearing and worse yet social distancing should be permanent and the new normal even after these vaccinations. If that is the case then live music is dead as well as other live entertainment.

Sad. His voice and music ability will be missed. A few years ago, someone at work told me he streams eveything and kinda laughed when he heard I have CDs. I told him musicians probably lose money because of that. I said that I like having the physical CD in my hand and when I go see a show, I can ask the musician to sign for me and that it would really make their day knowing fans are buying their music. I now see how right I was and how important it really is to go to the store and buy the music. I was about to buy tickets to Dragonforce in Detroit in the spring and was going to wait til the following week then everything shut down. I love and miss live shows but refuse to get vaccinated to attnend.

I get it man. I really do. I was able to talk to Wayne Static just months before he died, and what he said echos many of the things said in this letter. I would rather see him step away for a few years and hopefully come back, than to leave us forever like Wayne did. Fix yourself and get healthy Marco.

I agree with you Herman and Marko, a lot of great musicians do not get paid the way they are supposed to be paid, compared to mainstream bad taste artists... and they do not even get the recognition they deserve. Unlike mainstream artists, they are living the dream, and yet musicians like metal bands, don't get much, yes they have toured the world but at what cost, just like what you mentioned, Herman, they have to get insurance for themselves which the responsibility should fall on to the promoter and management...Yes, some of you will say, "It costs money to promote" I agree, it does, that's how it works, but at the end of the day, who really benefitted from these things, Is it the musicians or the greedy promoters and management?

Years ago the band TLC broke down why they had to declare bankruptcy, even when they had the most successful tour and album of the year. They said they were paid 6 million dollars to be split three ways in one year. They said they had to pay for their own studio time recording the album. They had to pay for the production of their own videos promoting the albums. They had to pay for their tour buses, their stage sets, their roadies, their crew, hotels, costumes, etc...They said by the time they finished paying everyone that year, each of them didn't even have enough money to cover their food or rent. It's super sad but true. And to show you that nothing in the music business has changed, TLC gave that interview back in 1995. Nearly 25 years later and the record companies are still screwing artists.

I never realized it was so bad for the artists. I will no longer count on live streams, and I will support my favorite artists by buying the albums and videos instead of freeloading of their hard work. It breaks my heart as it looks like Marco has so much fun on stage. It is a shame that it has come to this.

Marko also mentioned, profits going to Middle East to a theocratic country, where you would get beheaded for listening to the music from Nightwish and embracing what they sing about (Nightwish members are secular atheists mainly). This Middle-Eastern country he refers to is Saudi-Arabia, third biggest shareholder of the Livenation.

strange press release, not polished at all, like a bad translation, or was it not proof read? well, it seems he just had enough. with NW he was in this limbo of well known metal band, but not well known enough for mainstream and the big money. also, the interval of their albums did increase over the years, and the solo projects had a small fanbase, but never took really off. but then, he had the "masked singer success"...maybe that was the final straw that made him think "ok, time for a change, if i want to reinvent myself it's now or never". i have seen signs of big changes in NW coming for about 2 years. Floor quite openly stating she is not looking forward to touring again, she is also pushing her YT channel with her own productions/covers. she had some success outside of the band (home country show). the last album didn't do that well either, and i guess there must have been some discussions about money in the band because their tour-staff tried to do some NW-covers and raise some money, which i don't think took off. so, yea, i fully understand him going "wait, we are the largest metal band in the world, but still struggling for money? how can that even be?!"

The phrase "music industry" already clashes to the idea of musicians own freedom of making and performing music at their own pace and script. Do we call other live performaces industries? Theatre? Circus? Ballet? Poem reading? No! There is movie industry, probably equally ruthless to the performers like the music industry. Milking away from talented people, a bunch of hyenas, driving talented people into experiencing depressions and messed up lives. I'm happy that Marco decided to leave and focus into other projects.

I think Marko is absolutely right. The involvement of big business in music will always end up sacrificing people in order to squeeze the most possible profit out of their creativity. This is an endemic problem in modern business culture everywhere. It will only really change if we can shift our collective focus away from money and on to humanity. Hmmm... I'm starkly reminded of the film Breaking Glass, starring Hazel O'Connor. I think it was made in 1979, over 40 years ago!

To me what's happening to the music industry is just another example of what has happened/is happening to industry generally. The executives are finding ever more creative ways to squeeze the workforce in order to feed the shareholders so that the executives get their salaries. Basically the people with assets and capital get rewarded, the people doing the labour not so much.

I play in garage band and it is my hobby, so my oppinions maybe do not fit problems of profesional musicians. I have experience that it is easier to manage a concert on my own, and it also brings more money. Maybe, pay own gig manager together with other bands could be a better way than slavery of agency. And even if it earns less money compared with super big festival, it could be more for bands. I do not know the nubres, so you have to think about it.

The industry has been dead for years. No more record company support. No album support, no tour support, nothing. The most you can hope for is a distribution deal and even those are filled with greedy industry types. The grassroots approach of making an album and touring with record company support is long gone. It’s very difficult to make your own album, promote, tour, handle merch and everything else unless you are already at supergroup status. New bands have almost no chance these days and that’s a terrible shame.

When people don't have much money to spend the first thing they start to cut spending on is art. Especially when you can get art for free. Streaming services made that possible. They don't take all the blame, the big companies have been exploiting artist forever, but it sure doesn't help. We need to work to closing the wage cap so people can start spending on money again. And we need to make it impossible for companies to take over half of the money an artist makes.

If you want to make money go out on tour and perform for an audience. Like Metallica who complained about illegal streaming etc. Get out on tour FFS. Think about it. Dom you think other artists like painters sculpters etc. Get paid when People look att their paintings? No they get paid when they sell their paintings.

How did the music industry get to this position? If artists can't make money form their studio recordings, singles and albums, and they can't make money from their own goddamn live shows, how the fuck are you supposed to make money? As for the live shows, is there a reason a band as successful as Nightwish or Dragonforce doesn't cut out the middleman and organise/promote their own shows?

I've gotten to the point of buying the physical album and saying screw the digital. For the most part the physical comes with a digital code. But I've noticed companies like google pushing people away from album sales. I can stream any album made but cant buy it from google anymore. So its not like I'm listening to a mix and all the sudden something new comes up and I can decide to purchase the track or album. I can just add it to a playlist and say fuck the artist if I'm not willing to dive deeper into finding out where to purchase it. And its a shame because its capitalizing on people being lazy for the most part. There are plenty of times I've screenshotted a track because it came up while I was busy at work and just forget later that I made a note to look up the band since I have to jump through these hoops to do it. And it just doesnt seem to be getting better. It seems like they are hiding options to support the artist further and further behind bullshit.

I might be wrong but my impression is that depending on the music the music industry can be really nice or really bad. I don't think that artists who break through in the pop music side have as much to worry about. But for alternative music it's really rough. And that's unfair. Pop music is to me like a completely different beast, it's this big machine that a LOT of money goes into and one that almost tries to brainwash people into liking the music that comes out (even if most songs sound about the same). Many artists on that end don't even write their own music, they usually don't play any instruments, they get access to state of the art studios, session musicians, composers and secured spot on radio and other places. They make sure that you will hear their songs whether you want to or not and that has to cost a LOT of money. And yet it seems like the artist have a lot of money to throw around. All because they think about music where it's safer to aim for quantity of "fast food" rather than quality of "vegan food". (If that makes sense) It's truly unfair that hardworking bands that has been around for many many years with a decently sized fanbase can't keep doing what they and their fans love (due to the industry practices) while other genres don't have those issues and are forced into your face. Also they should treat artists better not just for the sake of the artists but for themselves as well. If things are getting worse I believe they are creating a need for a industry revolution. Which seems to have already started. With more and more unsigned artist making a career on web through services like youtube and soundcloud for example. More and more artists might decide to stay unsigned and do everything on their own.

I see a lot of people saying he shouldn't have singled out the Middle East... People, he's referring to the fact that the Saudi Arabian government owns 5.7% of Live Nations stock. Ticketmaster and a whole host of other promotion, production, and music related companies are owned by Live Nation. These predatory companies are sucking the artists dry and a big beneficiary of this money is Saudi Arabia... yet it's against the law in their own country for people to LISTEN to this music. So I think Marco is pointing out the hypocrisy of this. Makes it hard to go out and deal with all the things Herman was speaking of, be on tour which is a big risk monetarily and health-wise, only to make people rich who say your music is bad and will behead people for listening to it.

I totally understand him... I myself struggle with depressive moods from time to time - I don't know if it's something he was thinking about for a long time or something sudden that pushed him to make the decision that it's better for him leave... anyway, Nightwish was my first ever metal band I've listened to and I owe it to them for opening the door to me into this beautiful genre of music - I can't even imagine how empty my life would be without listening to heavy metal every single day. My only regret is that I've never got the chance to see them perform live - and to those who love Nightwish it's obvious why - I can't even envision the band performing without his vocals - but then again people said the same thing when Tarja left but it worked out for them in the long run. At the end of the day his health and happiness is far more important than anything else and we have to respect that.

If you know so much, you write the music, play the instruments, and sing. Oh, that's right, you have zero talent. IMHO, there needs to be a musicians' union. Only way to make them "play fair".

I personally would rather have Marco retire and have him around to play another day, than to lose him to depression like others before him.

The music & my relation to it. For many years ago I got interested in Hi -fi. The better the audio became the more annoyed I became. The editing was in some recordings so bad that it was almost unbearable to listen to. I decide to figure out where I could put my money and what I else could do to put some pressure on the music industry. My focus became the recording quality or the lack of it. So i bought only records from companies that had sound quality as their focus. Though my hearing has become bad I still buy records and I still try to support good companies that are trying to make a difference. I have then also discovered that some bands have other ways of earning money(patreon, merchendies & used equiment). Today when I find someone I like I see if they have somthing that i can buy to support them. I understand Marco cos it's annoying that you see a craftmanship disapear cos the person can't afford doing what they want. Last year here in Denmark we had a conflict between Google & the copyright holders. What I can understand the artists still don't like the agreement that copyright holders(KODA ). When concerts is open again please see if the venue has it's own site for buying tickets, avoid buy tickets from compagnies like Livenation/ticketmaster. For new artist avoid 360 contracts AND maintain your own web-shop, patreon, skill-share or go-fundme.

How about you guys (all the bands) form a coop/union where you can negotiate with venues directly and bypass the promoters. If there's one thing I hate is having my money got to where I did not intend it to. Unless the middle man provides more value than they take from you there is no reason to have them.

His reasoning is definitely valid. As much as I hate the fact she's not going to be playing I completely support him and what he's doing. Maybe if everybody in the music industry followed his lead for just a year these companies would realize what they're doing and cut the artists in for a bigger share. All it takes is one company to make a change and start paying all these wonderful people what they are actually worth and taking a little less for themselves and everybody would sign with them, making them even more money in the long run.

He's not doing what he wants to do, He's doing what he has to do. It's sad so sad, But he's sooo right and your right. the industry has got to wake up and see what needs to happen. more people need to stand up and speak out!! more power to Marko, God Bless Him

Sorry but it's not just the music industry, all industries and corporations are filled with greed and corruption nowadays. for their own profit they are turning customers and partners into "COWs" milking them until they bleed.

Music should be priced better! When we still had records, that was a working system for the artists. Of course there was greedy labels taking most of the money, but still band made more and labels had more to put in records

Someone in chat asked "Has the music industry become as bad as he wrote?" The music industry has been as bad and worse for decades upon decades. The advent of the modern age of the Internet where on one side some musicians cut away all the fat and do their thing on AM-posts, Twitch, Patreon, etc, combined with another 100 layers of fat being added to the mix for people locked into the "classic" music industry by adding even more share being stolen away by streaming services and the like, brings this contrast forward. Heck, even some pop princess like Taylor Swift is going as far as re-recording and re-releasing all her music to cut out the industry from in between. Musicians are waking up to just how seriously they are being screwed by seeing the new generation (and some old ones that are with the times) of musicians record and perform without having the record industry fucking them in the ass 24/7.

@boggy6060 They might find another bassist to replace Marco. But Marco is also the front man and the backing vocal, his harmonization is very good and his vocal performance is consistent. The later role is hard to replace.

any creative career can get rough. REAL rough. I'm an independent video game creator (i.e. art, animation, music, writing, coding, etc, all of it) and it's incredibly easy to hit that wall of being in the creative process but being so discouraged by the fact that you have no money coming in until the final product launches (hopefully) successfully. And if you do well? You're still at the mercy of your sales platforms, or whoever else is out to get a piece of what you've earned over 'the process'. Or even when you don't do as well as you were hoping and the returns aren't even close to how much you put in to keep doing what you love doing. It shrivels your motivation and creativity into nothing and makes you think "what am I doing with my life? is it time to grow up and get a 'real job'?" And when you finally break down and start a normal job out of sheer survival when you hit those rock bottom moments, it's so easy to fall into the miserable routine of a 9/5 just because it's easy and consistent. There's no motivation to stay in a crunch time mode to keep pushing and pushing until you make it. And it's HARD to get that hunger back once you've let it slip through your fingers, even for just a little while. There's so many things that clusterfuck into a creators life that makes you second guess if doing what you're doing even has any point, or makes it hard to see the point of continuing, or even making the act of continuing seem like you're just killing yourself and destroying your life with a dream that feels like life doesn't want you to have. I honestly can't blame the guy. I think we've all felt that way at some point. It's just a milestone and a decision that you have to get through. I was 'lucky' enough to find my conviction when I said if I had to live the same 9/5 day in day out for the rest of my days, it wouldn't matter how much money I made, I'd kill myself before I turn 40. For me, its either I keep pushing and make it to a point where I'm happy and proud of the mark I leave on the word, or I die. Which seems morbid and edgy and whatnot, but at the same time it kind of feels good knowing that I know what I want/need out of life and have the conviction to stay on the path. I don't have the "can I/should I/what if" debates anymore. Good luck to him and anyone else going through that trial.

Is it just me or, does very few new bands reach a sustainable popularity? I keep seeing the same old dinosaur bands like Iron Maiden, Metallica and Black Sabbath headlining festivals. Why dont people embrace newer bands? With new I mean, new like 2-3 year old bands, at max. There's tons of great bands out there, but metal fans are so stuck in the past!
